the journey
video
Summary
The video, Journey, explores the condition of living globally: one could be in Africa on Tuesday, Manhattan on Wednesday and the Caribbean on Thursday. While traversing this landscape, the irony that we are surrounded by people who, in varying degrees, are also connected by these places makes time seem transcendental.
From this video, the Journey, shot while driving through New York City, the Caribbean and Africa still images have been captured, printed digitally and in some cases, painted on canvas. What looks like a landscape, in fact a Caribbean seascape, appears magically in the windshields of these speeding vehicles photographed in Manhattan. Only when these video images are downloaded in the computer is it possible to register what is actually being seen as we speed through life in our daily travels. The work asks the question: “What did we really see, what did we remember…How much of what we think we saw was outside of us and how much of what we recorded in memory was actually part of our internal landscape…” Scientists now believe that “the brain records everything to which it pays any degree of conscious attention, and that this recording is permanent.”
